Brothers Edward and Alphonse are stuck in a terrible new reality after a horrifying alchemy experiment fails at the Elric home. The lads tried to revive their recently deceased mother against the alchemical principle prohibiting human transmutation. Instead, they experienced terrible personal loss: Alphonse’s body crumbled, and Edward lost a leg before giving up an arm to maintain Alphonse’s soul bound to a massive set of armor, which allowed him to remain in the physical world.

Their next-door neighbor Pinako Rockbell and her granddaughter Winry come to the brothers’ aid. Winry, a bio-mechanical engineering prodigy, uses “automail,” a durable, adaptable metal used in robots and battle armor, to produce prosthetic limbs for Edward. The Elric brothers embark on a mission to heal their bodies after years of training in search of the Philosopher’s Stone, a potent diamond that enables an alchemist to subvert the laws of Equivalent Exchange.

The boys’ trip involves them in an expanding plot that imperils the future of the globe as Edward grows to be a notorious alchemist and acquires the moniker “Fullmetal.”
